General Update
I’ve got a lot to update, so I might as well do this bullet-point style.
1. I can’t believe that Super Bowl. Amazing game (well, 4th quarter), amazing circumstance, etc. I can’t say I’m happy to see the Giants win, but I really enjoyed that. I STILL can’t believe that play where Manning got away and Tyree made that ridiculous catch. Now it’s just killing time sports-wise until the NCAA Tournament.
2. I haven’t really gambled much this trip. Last trip (the Absolute Poker thing) down here I was playing a lot at the local casino, but tonight was the first time I played. Took down about $175 playing $20 Pai Gow for like an hour. I was running ridiculously hot. On the other hand, Adam lost $400 in a similar time span. Neither one of those is supposed to happen in Pai Gow…
3. My project that I’m down here working on is coming along. It’s taking awhile because one of the developers is kind of hung up on a major issue, but I think that he’s pretty close to solving it. Even if he isn’t, we’re still pretty likely to launch in the next few weeks. On the other hand, another one of the developers is doing a terrific overall job and he’s making amazing progress on his part of the project.
4. I have been to Italy before. I’ve eaten Italian food at some terrific restaurants all over the world. However, I don’t think I’ve been to a better Italian restaurant than Café Di Bartolo in Escazu, Costa Rica. It’s really pretty incredible how good it is. Everything I’ve tried has been absolutely terrific and I really love going there. If you’re ever even in San Jose, please go there if you like Italian food in the slightest. I can’t find a ton about it online, but here is a writeup that someone else did: link.
5. The BLUFF SEO project that I’ve written about a few times before (Post #1) (Post #2) is still coming along great. We started tracking our search traffic on Nov 14th. On Jan 28th we had our best-ever day for visits from search engines. That number was close to 5x the number of visits from the 14th and we’re consistently doing about 4x the search traffic from mid November. If we would ever fix the lingering issues and get working on our off-site SEO, it could literally be ridiculous how much search traffic we would get. Either way I’m still happy with how it’s going, although I did lose a bet with one of the BLUFF developers on the % of traffic we would get from search in January. I set an over/under, he took the over and we crushed the number that I set. Oh well, I guess I’ll take it.
6. It’s been up for a little while, but there’s been a major re-design at PSDollars. The site is also adding some blogs and other content, although progress has been kinda slow on that front thus far.
7. I keep coming up with new poker ideas. I have a ton of trouble finding good developers. And by good, I mean people who can do more than basic php/mysql (I can do that myself, it isn’t hard). I’m talking about people skilled in C++/C#/VB/etc, various databases, english-speaking AND know at least a little about poker or are capable of understanding what’s going on. That combination is like 1 in a 1,000 for the most part. To say the least, it’s frustrating.
8. I’ve seen a ton of movies lately. A bunch on DVD like Swingers (8.5/10), Waiting (7/10), Charlie Wilson’s War (9/10) and Eastern Promises (5/10). Probably a bunch more that I don’t remember. Charlie Wilson’s War is really really terrific, you have to go see it if you haven’t seen it yet. I also saw Cloverfield in the theater this past weekend. It had decent effects and it was entertaining, but I thought the whole thing was predictable. Probably worth seeing, but only if you’re bored and you’re just looking to kill time. Don’t skip something good to go see it. Also of note, we saw it at this VIP theater place with huge reclining seats, waiter service, food/drink, etc. It was only $8, so a pretty good deal and a very very nice theater with an incredible sound system. It made the movie a pretty cool experience.
9. Some exciting stuff could be happening with thepokerfilm. There is the distinct possibility of turning the general concept (following around rich young poker ballers) into a TV show of some kind. There are lots of variables still in play and tons of uncertainty, but it seems to me like the ball is finally rolling on the idea. It’s still a longshot though, so I am just hoping that the people working on it can get it done and I’ll just pitch in if and when my help is needed.
Whew, tons of updates. Have good week everyone.
