Pushup Propbet Update

This is an update to my original Pushup Propbet post.

I’ve been training on-and-off doing pushups. I’ll do a few hundred one day then zero for three days. I guess I’m just not THAT focused on it yet because it’s still like two months off. But I obviously want to build up my ability to do a bunch of pushups fast.

So, last night, I decided to test myself out again. Good news and bad news.

The good news is that I did 50 “perfect pushups” in a row — Twice. I did the sets about 30 minutes apart. Each time I got to 40 without much trouble, which is a big improvement over the last test I did. I also managed to do the 50 in about 65 seconds each, which would have left me 35 seconds to do the last 10.

The bad news is that I’m not sure I had 10 more in me either time. Each time, 40-45 was tough and 46-50 was a big struggle. Like to the point where my arms were shaking and I was on the verge of collapse. Doing 10 more might have been impossible at the rate I was going. I either needed to slow down or take a short break in the “up” position.

I’ve noticed during my pushup training that it’s typical for me to go 0-30 without any real difficulty, but then like 38 is really tough. So my theory is that there’s a steep drop-off in your ability at a certain “number”. This is as opposed to some other exercises where it’s kind of a slow drop off (ie, 1 is easy, 2 is a little less easy, etc). But, obviously, I can raise my “easy” number via training and then I can power through the last few to get to 60 and win the bet in December.

I’ll keep posting here about it. Maybe if I get to the point that I can do 60 in 100 seconds, I’ll post a video (I’m not sure if that would win the bet for me or not, I’ll have to check with Steve. I can’t remember if we agreed that it HAD to be done in person over Christmas. Either way I would be okay with it).

If you don’t make enough progression soon enough maybe you should start taking creatine daily. Just google a bit on the effects of creatine to get an idea of the stuff.

I’m very happy with my progression. To go up by 6 pushups in a few weeks without much work is great. I’m on pace to win and, if I up the training intensity, then I should have this wrapped up in a few weeks.
