Home Again

My last day in Vegas was pretty uneventful.  I moved over to the Rio for one night because Adam left to go back to Costa Rica.  I stayed with Jeff from Bluff Magazine but I only saw the guy for a few minutes because I spent most of the day hanging out with Steve and Alex.  First I met up with them and two of Alex’s friends over at the Venetian Grand Lux Cafe.  That place is really good.  I know it isn’t some super fancy deluxe cuisine or something like that but I think I prefer a place like Grand Lux over the $300/person sort of places.  Then we went and checked out the Palazzo (ie, Venetian addition for those who don’t travel to Vegas) for a few minutes because Alex’s friends were staying there and I don’t think any of us had really seen much of the Palazzo yet.  I have to say it’s really incredible.  I really like the Wynn/Encore set up but I think I might have to stay at Palazzo next time I go to Vegas.  Between the food, rooms and pool area I don’t see how anyone can go wrong staying there.

Now, after a short one week trip from Cayman, I’m back on the island.  I had to get up at 5 am Las Vegas time to make my 6:45 am flight to Houston.  That was brutal.  Travelling is really a drag in general but getting up at 5 am makes the day pretty rough.  I took an accidental 3 hour nap when I got home which is kind of causing a problem now because I’m not even slightly tired.

Anyway, both flights went pretty smoothly except for one interesting moment on the second plane.  I was talking to the woman sitting next to me while people were still boarding the airplane and the engines weren’t really fired up so it was relatively quiet on the plane.  A few minutes later the guy sitting in the row in front of me (but sitting directly in front of the woman I was talking to) flipped his shit and tilted on us for talking.  He was like “the whole plane can hear you” (speaking directly to me).  First of all, I’m really not a loud talker.  Second, we’d been sitting there for no more than a few minutes and it was only a matter of time until we pushed back from the gate and took off.  After which there would have been plenty of background noise to drown out the conversation.  I’m not debating that the guy could hear us talking.  He definitely could — I could hear people all around me talking.  I mean, we were speaking like 2 feet from him or however far the next row is.  I just think that he could have asked nicely and not been an asshole off the bat.  It isn’t like he flipped out after asking us to talk really quietly and we proceeded to be loud or something like that.  I proceeded to do the passive aggressive thing and disturb the seat in front of me over and over (it was his wife or gf) … ie, tapping it, using it to get up, etc.  The woman next to me was equally dumbfounded by his outburst so we proceeded to make fun of the guy for the rest of the flight.  Not sure how much of it he heard.

Back in Cayman, I am now spending my first night at my “permanent” apartment.  For the first four months I was living in a short-term rental waiting for construction to finish on this place.  It feels great to have a more permanent place to set up my stuff.  And it’s also a really nice apartment on a really nice part of the island.  Unlike my typical busy travel schedule, I’m going to be here for the entire month of July (August travel gets crazy again) and my super smart sister is coming to visit me in a few weeks.  She’s about to start her PhD at Yale so she’s doing this trip right before getting settled in New Haven.  It should be a really fun month.
