Athens Auburn Weekend
As I stated in my last entry, I am in Athens GA this weekend for some festivities. Most of them center around the Auburn-UGA game that happened last night. I spent most of Friday in Atlanta and then drove out to Athens after the traffic died down. I met up with sub and his friends at his girlfriend’s roommate’s birthday party and then we headed downtown to drink for a few more hours. I don’t really remember the names of all of the bars that we went to but most of them were packed. Supposedly the Friday and Saturday nights for an Auburn home game are among the busiest bar nights of the year. To avoid the crazy crowds, we went to the crappiest bar we knew of (I think it was called RPM) and we instantly managed to get drinks.
Brandon Schaefer (who happens to be in Athens this weekend too) and sub flipped for who was going to buy 20 shots of Patron and obv sub won so Schaefer ended up getting 20 shots of some sort of tequila that was definitely not Patron. Of course, he asked for Patron but you’ve gotta remember that we were at a super shitty bar so they probably fill up their Patron bottles with some shitty tequila. I did one shot of it and I was done with it. Disgusting.
So, while we were out at RPM, I was talking to a few of sub’s female friends. Somehow the subject got turned to poker which eventually led to talking about my blog … I wasn’t the one that brought it up but I can’t really remember how it happened either. Anyway, they didn’t understand why anyone would read my blog. I didn’t have a good answer for them but I assured them that a lot of people regularly check in on my blog so I need your help here. They both said to post their facebook links because they wanted to get to know more poker players. So, here are the facebook links: Amanda and Katy. I assure you that these girls are not randoms who I am trying to annoy. Katy is actually the girl from thepokerfilm who suggested playing strip poker (you may or may not remember that). They really want people to add them on facebook. Please don’t make me look dumb — I really need your help here. Please add them.
EDIT: I’ve removed the links and full names because the girls cried uncle and asked me to take down the links (despite their earlier insistence). They didn’t know what they were getting themselves into.
So, moving on to Saturday, we woke up and headed over to North Campus for an all-day tailgating experience. People were out drinking there as early as 9 AM but we didn’t get there until after 2 PM. But, considering the Auburn game didn’t start until 7 PM, we still had plenty of time to get drink and hang out before we had to go buy some tickets. Katy was nice enough to take a picture of everyone from thepokerfilm (and a few other guys):

The tailgate was unreal. I couldn’t believe how big it was. There were thousands and thousands of people packed into a large quad area. I still can’t get over how many hot girls there are in Athens. Schaefer and I agreed that an average looking girl in Athens is an extremely hot girl elsewhere. It’s like there’s a curve due to the degree of talent in the area. Anyway, I took a short video of a bunch of girls who were probably dancing for a few hours on end:
Just for reference, most people referred to this specific group as the “fat chick dance party.” That’s one spot where you see the effect of the curve.
After tailgating, three of us headed over to the game and bought some tickets from scalpers. Instead of sitting in our actual seats (which weren’t together) we went up to the bleacher seats up at the top at the end of the field. Here’s a view from where we were sitting:

The game was really sick. To get an idea of the atmosphere, I took a short video when the team was about to run out onto the field. I wanted to get a few more seconds of it but the phone stopped recording at the 1 minute mark … oh well:
UGA went down 14-0 really quickly and they looked awful early on. The defense couldn’t hold the Auburn offense and the UGA offense didn’t even get a first down until the second quarter (I think). I made a bad bet with sub where I took Auburn to win the game when they were up 14-7 in the second quarter and he got odds. At the time I made it I said it was a bad bet but I was actually trying to even out a small balance that we have right now so I didn’t really care. It was also an emotional hedge because I wanted to see UGA come back at home just for the experience. Schaefer and sub also bet $350 on the length of the hedges that go around the field at Sanford Stadium. Schaefer took the over on 350 yards and sub took the under. We’re still trying to settle the bet but we can’t find anywhere online that has an answer. Anyone have any sort of authoritative answer?
Anyway, I got my wish and lost the bet with sub on the game — UGA game back to win 31-24 after running over Auburn in the second half. I’m really glad I came up for this game just because of how it played out and the significance of the rivalry between the two schools. Next year I’m going to try to make it up to Jacksonville for the UGA-Florida game.
Today we’re watching NFL and generally bumming around.

I add two girls you say really want to be added by poker players and they still don’t accept, I’m that big a cow…
yup
you can use Google Earth to settle the bet, use the ruler tool in the program. I have used this to settle bets in the past, as well as find out that tracks that have been used for prop bets are not exactly 1/4 mile around, to be sure the ruler in Google Earth was very accurate, I have measured other tracks and most all are exactly 1/4 mile around

I love it that Brandon Schaefer always shows up in these random places. Looks like a great time. And why do people read your blog??? Because you’re so darn interesting!!!
